Overview

South Asia comprises the world's most populous countries with rapidly developing economies. With the opening up of markets, dramatic expansions in science and technology, urban infrastructure, and growing number of people whose increasing incomes fulfill their modern aspirations, South Asia has firmly established itself on the world map. Yet, major social concerns continue to plague the South Asian countries. Among them is South Asia's dismal record of child rights. It continues to be home to the world's largest number of child workers, in spite of several efforts being made to eliminate it. Based on officially available statistics, it is estimated that there are 21.6 million children, aged between 5 and 14 years, working in South Asia out of a total of 300 million children in this age group. Poverty is considered as one of the key reasons for the exceedingly high proportion of child workers in South Asia. It has been widely noted that these children often untrained, work in hazardous conditions and are thus vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Children work in the unorganized sector, where labour conditions are unregulated. To quote a few examples, children are found working in home based industries such as glass factories, making carpets, weaving saris, making fire crackers, rolling beedis, picking garbage etc.

While Governments, international agencies, NGOs and civil society organizations are fighting a hard, yet determined battle against child labour, we at YASHADA felt it was essential to equip future practitioners with a sound conceptual understanding of child labour, and enhance their practical and theoretical skills to deal with it. Keeping this in mind. YASHADA in consultation with ILO-IPEC has decided to start a Post Graduate Diploma in Child Labour and Certificate Course on Child Labour. We hope that YASHADA's efforts will encourage future generations to affect change, and ensure a safe and healthy childhood to all.
