The set up of a specialist training centre for urban functionaries which was established in 1996, has grown and diversified tremendously and taken the form of State Institute of Urban Development (SIUD).

The SIUD's Objectives

  • To professionalise urban administrator through inter-agency and technical training.
  • To act as consultants for organisational development, and formulation of city development plans and strategies
  • To develop a state-wide repository of information for urban policy formulation.

Projects Undertaken

NRCUP Project
  • Sponsored by Ministry of Housing and Urban Poor Alleviation, Govt, of India and United Nations Development Programme under National Strategy for Urban Poor
  • Jointly implemented by SIUD, All India Institute of Local Self Government, Mumbai and Centre for Good Governance, Hyderabad
  • Aimed at enabling formulation of appropriate action plans for urban poverty alleviation
  • Main Components of the Project include:
    • NSUP Website on Urban Poverty & Livelihoods
    • State & City Profiles
    • Manual on Livelihood Mapping
    • MIS Formats for MoHUPA & GIS Manual
    • Capacity Building for Senior Management
    • Register of Innovative Practices in Urban Governance
    • Audio-Visual Documentation related to Urban Poverty & Publication of Newsletter
National/State-level Capacity Building
  • Capacity building courses under the sponsorship of MoHUPA and Ministry of Urban Development, Gol for the urban managers and other stakeholders.
  • Training programmes on Urban Poverty Alleviation for the 63 mission cities and the non-mission cities.
  • Trainees include senior, middle and cutting edge functionaries in urban areas
  • The training programmes for state cadre officials and people's representatives are conducted at ULB level.
City Managers Forum (CMF)
  • CMF will function as knowledge network of municipal commissioners, city managers and technical personnel in ULBs
  • Aimed to share experiences and contribute to overall knowledge pool for urban poverty alleviation programme.
  • SlUD to act as Secretariat of CMF and provide platform for this activity.
Consultancy Projects
  • Assisted in policy formulation in the areas of property tax reform
  • Disaster mitigation and information technology in the urban sector.
  • Recently consultancy projects like TNA of some select Municipal Corporations and Housing Department undertaken.

PGDUM Course

A unique and most comprehensive course on Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Management successfully commenced.
